Everyone can learn how to draw. Lizzi Schippert, NJWCS, and Sven Widen of Open Your Eyes are fulltime professional artists and have been teaching together for 20 years. We show you how to see, and think, as an artist.
These studio classes provide a broad foundation in classical drawing and painting. Entering students are presented with an individualized program suited to their personal direction. Good drawing skills are emphasized as being the basis for understanding the visual language. Students work from a variety of still life arrangements. As the student progresses, they are introduced to the media of their choice: pen & ink, pastel, watercolor, oil, acrylics, etc. With a solid foundation in the classical concepts – becoming adept at composition, value, perspective, color & technique – the student is encouraged to find their individual voice and creatively explore the techniques and media most conducive to it.
Portfolio students, whether working on a portfolio for college art schools or advanced highschool programs, are guided in all of the above. The student is also given specific exercises covering the varied subject matter and media required for the specified portfolio and discipline; including fine arts, architecture, fashion, product design, anime, etc. Subject matter is augmented by attending our Life Drawing sessions and Plein Air outings, in season. Artwork successfully completed in these venues is suitable for inclusion in the portfolio. Portfolio students also receive a focused analysis of choosing which images to include in a final portfolio review before it is submitted.
